Why Diets FailSo! Why Do Diets Fail?By Staff Is there anyone left who hasn't tried to lose weight by using a trendy for fashionable diet? It probably didn't work for you and it's frustrating, isn't it? But, you are not alone. The problem with most diets, including some very well known ones, is that they are doomed from the very beginning. Understanding why this is the case may help us with any of our future dieting attempts so it's important to understand a number of the core reasons. Let find out what they are. According to the Surgeon General, the reasons for dieting failure fall into easy to understand categories. Reason#1: Diets can be quite expensiveAs you know, there are a number of highly advertised diets available today that offer you complete meal plans. Nothing to think about here. Buy the plan, stick to the program and the weight comes off, right? Not necessarily. While these pre-programmed diets may work for some, it shouldn't be assumed that they will work for you. All of that aside, there is a cost associated with any of these programs. Even if you find a program of this type that is "perfect" for you, you may ultimately decide to stop simply because of the long-term cost. Reason#2: We all process certain food groups differently Many diets eliminate certain foods or even entire food groups. While we know that this is never a good idea, we run with it in the hopes of ridding ourselves of the excess fat and weight once and for all. Diets have been designed around the elimination of nearly every food group. We've seen them all. No doubt, you have too. Pro carbs, no carbs... pro protein, no protein... the list goes on forever. The fundamental drawback to any of the elimination types of diets is that they designed to deprive us. This can work against us on both the physical (craving) and subliminal (... but I like carbs) levels. These usually occur simultaneously and become a strong motivation to get off of the diet. This is a strong reason for diet failure. Reason#3: Diets are temporary It's safe to say that many of us view a diet as a temporary affair. "I'll lose the weight, then I can go back to my old eating habits." Whether we admit this to ourselves or not, this thought is always in the back of our minds before we start the diet or during the dieting itself. Since our psyche is telling us the dieting is only "temporary", it's no wonder we regain weight after we've achieved our goal. A good diet needs to be one where you can lose the weight, maintain your weight AND one you can comfortably live with. If your diet is one you can't live with, it will fail. Reason#4: Diets can be impractical to your lifestyle Let's face it. It isn't normal human behavior to weigh and measure our food, keep daily notes about the things we've eaten, finding less than appealing substitutes for foods we've eliminated. There may be certain personality types that enjoy this type immense recordkeeping and attention to every detail of our daily consumption, but this type of activity can become impractical for many women. Additionally, it can lead to guilt. If it's impractical, the diet will fail.Reason#5: Lowering your metabolic rate Yes, we all like to think that dieting will increase our metabolism and help to burn additional calories (and fat), but it really doesn't work that way. When you make significant reductions in your calorie intake, you metabolism will slow down. As your metabolism slows down, you'll use fewer calories and begin to make your new diet less effective. There's more to dieting than this. Please read Reason#6. Reason#6: Dieting is only half of the weight and fat loss equation A lifetime of true weight management DOES NOT mean focusing all of your attention on what you are eating. Physical activity is a must! Choosing the right physical exercise for yourself is just as important as choosing a diet itself. No matter which diet you ultimately select, or which physical exercise program you use, be sure to pick the ones that fit your lifestyle. These could be the most important decisions you will ever make about your personal fitness. Regardless which diet and exercise programs you are considering, it is always good advice to consult with your physician first. You physician should be able to assist you with steering you towards the proper programs that you can live with. |
